Ethiopian Refugees in Libya need your help.

 

As many of you are aware there are several hundred Ethiopian refugees in Libya who are caught in the cross fire due to the on-going fighting between the freedom seeking Libyan people and the tyrant Gadhafi forces. These Ethiopians are dying and sufferings beyond imagination due to neglect by Humanitarian Organizations operating in the area. They are not receiving same protection and resettlement assistance because not enough voices are highlighting their dire situation. Many are denied refugee status and trying dangerous alternatives to get out of harm’s way. There are many women and children among these Ethiopian brothers and sisters of us. They are not asking for much, just a few minutes of your time to write a letter, make a phone call, or email any official or organization you think could help. Continue reading this post »

Ethiopia: The great land-grab debate

GAMBELLA, 25 March 2011 (IRIN) – Ethiopia has little time for critics of its large-scale land-leasing policy, insisting the millions of dollars of foreign investment will create jobs, improve domestic agricultural expertise and reduce both poverty and the country’s chronic food insecurity.

The policy, part of a five-year Growth and Transformation Plan, has led to the cheap leasing of thousands of square kilometres of what the government says is mostly under-used or uncultivated land. Officially, land in Ethiopia is government-owned but occupants have customary rights.
Detractors complain of forcible relocation of local pastoralist populations, poorly paid work on the new farms, environmental degradation and a failure to deliver on promises of better infrastructure.
